Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19640

Hello Windows Insiders, Last Wednesdays Microsoft Released Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19640 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring.

All Smooth upgrades her except 1 device had some strange 100% CPU load on the 1st logon, non-responsive taskbar, fixed after restarting explorer.exe

General changes & improvements

  • Based on feedback, if your Downloads folder is synced to a cloud provider, we are disabling the option to have Storage Sense automatically clear out your Downloads folder on a cycle.
  • We updated our login logic, so if your PC is set up so you need to type in your username when logging in, accidentally starting your username with a space will no longer result in an error.

Known issues

  • We’re looking into an issue where some devices booting from eMMC storage bugchecked when resuming from hibernate.
  • We’re looking into reports of the update process hanging for extended periods of time when attempting to install a new build.
  • We’re working on fixing an issue for a future Insider Preview build where in Settings > Privacy, the Documents and Downloads sections show a broken icon next to their page name (just a rectangle).
  • We’re looking into reports that taskbar preview thumbnails aren’t rendering consistently (showing a blank area).

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19635

Hi all, last Thursday Microsoft released Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19635 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring.

Another smooth upgrade here, some minor tweaks a fixes, insiders are running smooth 😉

Fixes

  • We fixed an issue resulting in the apostrophes in the Location not available dialog, Mount File dialog, and File Explorer folder options text not being displayed correctly.
  • We fixed an issue where the Work or School account > Allow Windows Search to provide… toggle under Search Settings could be unexpectedly disabled.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in cellular data not working on certain devices.
  • We fixed an issue that could result in Settings crashing when changing display orientation or resolution.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in some Insiders seeing a large number of “Program Compatibility Assistant Service stopped working” critical events in Reliability Monitor.
  • We fixed an issue that could result in constant display flashing on certain devices.
  • We fixed an issue with the camera on certain devices showing unexpected artifacts.

Known issues

Cool Windows 10 Feature: Search With Screenshot

A new option in taskbar search, also available in the recently released 2004 Version of Windows 10 ‘Search with a screenshot’ integrates Bing Visual Search with Snip & Sketch

This enables you to quickly grab a snip of something on your screen and look it up on the internet.

Click or Tap in the ‘Type here to search’ box on your taskbar
Click or Tap the ‘Search wit a screenshot’ button in the right lower corner of search

As demo I used the snip & sketch interface that shows up to grab this picture of a GIF from my screen
a few seconds later I knew this person is Nick Jonas

This really is a timesaver go ahead an give it a try whenever you need more info on an image on your screen

#MSBuild: WinGet – Windows Command Line App Installer

At Build Microsoft released their own package repo accessible from any device to facilitate easy deployment of packages & applications

How do you get this on your device?

Step 1

Open the Windows Store to grab your copy of App Installer

If you already have it installed make sure you get it updated to the latest version (1.0.41331.0 or higher)

Step 2

Fire up a PowerShell window & run Winget Show to list all available packages

The 1st time I ran this on May 19th, the listing had 146 packages, only 2 days later…

Today May 21st we’re up to 194!

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19628

Hi All, last Wednesday Microsoft released Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19628 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring.

General changes & improvements

  • We’re adding initial support for DNS over HTTPS, so that you can opt into using encryption when Windows makes DNS queries. Follow the instructions in this blog post to opt in as it will be off by default.
  • Thanks everyone who shared feedback about the updated version of Korea Microsoft IME introduced with Build 18941. For the moment, the IME version will be returning to the previous one while we take your feedback into consideration.

Fixes

  • We’ve fixed an issue causing some devices fail to update with error code 0xc0000409. If you continue to experience this error, please let us know by filing new feedback in Feedback Hub.

Known issues

  • We’re aware Narrator and NVDA users that seek the latest release of Microsoft Edge based on Chromium may experience some difficulty when navigating and reading certain web content. Narrator, NVDA and the Edge teams are aware of these issues. Users of legacy Microsoft Edge will not be affected. NVAccess has released a NVDA 2019.3 that resolves the known issue with Edge.
  • We’re looking into reports of the update process hanging for extended periods of time when attempting to install a new build.
  • We’re working on fixing an issue for a future Insider Preview build where in Settings > Privacy the Documents and Downloads sections show a broken icon next to their page name (just a rectangle).
  • We’re looking into reports of IIS configuration being set to default after taking a new build. You will need to back up your IIS configuration and restore it after the new build is installed successfully.
  • We’re looking into reports that taskbar preview thumbnails aren’t rendering consistently (showing a blank area).

Releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19041.264 to the Slow & Release Preview rings

Hi All, Microsoft has released 20H1 Build 19041.264 (KB4556803) to Windows Insiders in the Slow and Release Preview rings. This Cumulative Update includes quality improvements. Key changes include:

  • We have fixed a performance issue in Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) that prevents it from working correctly for many users.
  • We fixed an issue that prevents cleaning tools, such as Disk Cleanup, from removing previously installed updates.
  • We have updated the 2020 start date for daylight saving time (DST) in the Kingdom of Morocco. For more information, see KB4557900.
  • Security updates to Internet Explorer, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Media, Windows Shell, Microsoft Xbox, Microsoft Edge, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Cryptography, Windows Authentication, Windows Kernel, Windows Virtualization, Windows Update Stack, Windows Core Networking, Internet Information Services, Windows Network Security and Containers, Windows Active Directory, Windows Server, and the Microsoft JET Database Engine.

If you installed earlier updates, only the new fixes contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

How to Set Default Sign-in Option in Windows 10

At the logon screen by default the last used sign in method is shown

You might have many options to choose from,
– Pin
– Password
– Picture
– Microsoft account
– Face Recognition
– Fingerprint (Helo)

If you want to set a default logon method for your users, a reg tweak can do this for you:

It’s stored per user in the Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\UserTile key

key examples, 1st is set to Face, 2nd & 3rd to Password

There are 2 parts to these keys, the Name part is the user’s SID – the Data part the actual selected option

getting a user’s SID can be done by using the following command in an elevated command prompt

wmic useraccount, get name, sid

To set the default logon type for an account, edit the corresponding key with:

  1. PIN: {D6886603-9D2F-4EB2-B667-1971041FA96B}
  2. Picture: {2135F72A-90B5-4ED3-A7F1-8BB705AC276A}
  3. Password: {60B78E88-EAD8-445C-9CFD-0B87F74EA6CD}

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19624

General changes & improvements

  • We’re temporarily turning off the new search box in the default apps Settings pages while we work on improving performance and reliability.
  • We’re updating the VPN connection logic based on feedback, so that if you disconnect from a VPN network, it will now uncheck the option to auto-connect (similar to how it’s handled for Wi-Fi).
  • Based on feedback we’re updating the text of the Add a Device dialog so the list of examples under Bluetooth includes controllers.
  • We’re updating the Optional Updates Available section that appears in Windows Update settings, so that you will now be able to copy the text in case you need it.

Fixes

  • We’ve fixed an issue that was causing unexpected flickering across Windows shell surfaces and apps in the last two builds.
  • We’ve fixed an issue causing IIS configuration to be set to default after taking a new build.
  • We’ve fixed an issue causing a transient access error when quickly switching between WSL distros using the File Explorer integration.
  • We fixed an issue impacting explorer.exe reliability for some Insiders recently.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Settings and the taskbar volume flyout crashing recently when selecting certain endpoints from the audio endpoint list.
  • We fixed a race condition that could result in VPN not auto-connecting (if it was set up to do that) after upgrade.
  • We’ve fixed an issue where the battery icon on the lock screen always shows close to empty, regardless of actual battery levels. If you’re still experiencing this issue, please report it in the Feedback Hub.
  • We fixed a recent issue where if you opened your laptop after it’d been asleep, and it was connected to an external monitor with an external camera, Windows Hello would recognize you but not dismiss the lock screen.
  • We fixed an issue that could result in your device bug checking after it’d been asleep.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in certain Bluetooth mice being very slow to reconnect to your device after it’d been asleep.
  • We fixed an issue preventing you from navigating out of the Connect app’s settings dialog using a mouse.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Windows Security’s Core Isolation feature failing to enable on certain devices recently.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Windows Update failing with error code 0x800700b7.
  • We fixed a deadlock that could result in Windows Update’s checking for updates not completing and showing as in progress until Settings was closed and reopened.
  • We fixed an issue where some of the buttons and links on the Language Settings page weren’t the correct color when using high contrast.
  • We fixed an issue where the text in the Optimize Drives window under Scheduled Optimization section would be truncated in a number of different languages and at certain text scaling levels.

Want to grab your update to Windows 10 2004 early?

Note: make sure your 3rd party software is ready for the new build, if you’re running a 3rd party Antivirus solution that’s not signed of for the release yet, you might want to wait for that.

Release is almost here, but for those who want to grab it now, set your Insider settings to Release Preview to get the bits early.
